The decline in insects is currently on everyone's lips and not without reason, because the topic affects us all. While the decline is steadily advancing, especially on many agricultural areas, there are indications that many, including rare species, can find replacement habitats in green spaces and gardens in cities. Some species are now more common there than in the cleared open landscape, which is characterized by the intensive use of fertilizers and pesticides.
To report on this amazing diversity and to discover it together is the goal of the project Stadt.Wiesen.Mensch, a cooperation project of the State Museum for Natural History Karlsruhe and the Environment and Horticulture Office of the City of Karlsruhe. It is part of an initiative of the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts Baden-Württemberg to promote science communication on the subject of insect mortality.

The mushroom database of the SMNK contains more than 43,000 data records (as of December 31, 2017). We make the majority of the data available to the public via our own portal in the form of a digital catalog. The data are also made available via the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). However, these are usually only updated after several months and do not allow detailed queries, e.g. on host range and substrates of the fungi.

After the insects, spiders are the most common and species-rich animal group in the country. The possession of poison, which they use to gain prey, and the spinning power of all ages, which is unique in the animal kingdom, make them very effective predators. They occupy an important position in the food web of all terrestrial ecosystems.

ARAMOB is a project to collect and mobilize information on the distribution and ecology of spiders in Germany. The ARAMOB database currently includes data on spiders from systematic collections (studies) of the two natural history museums in Karlsruhe and Stuttgart as well as the Ecology and Ecotoxicology Working Group of the RWTH Aachen University. In the future, it will serve as a data collection for ecologically researching scientists in the AraGes and enable ecological analyzes of spider species and communities, such as temporal and spatial occurrence, phenology, habitat attachment, ecological preferences, indication of habitat quality.

Unsere Unterwasserkamera filmt in Echtzeit, wie Schwarzspitzenriffhai Karla ihre Runden durch Deutschlands größtes lebendes Korallenriff drehen. Mit etwas Glück können auch die Vivariums­mitarbeiter beim „Korallenputzen“ entdeckt werden.
